Odds and Ends #3

June 1st, 2002

Here are a group of New Haven Railroad artifacts that have nothing in common other than the fact that each is unusual and rarely encountered. All items from the collection of Marc Frattasio.

Hancock Air ChimeThe New Haven used two different styles of Hancock model #4700 air chime whistles on many pieces of equipment. The best known Hancock air chime whistle had a large square sound reflector and received widespread application on locomotives and RDC units. The least known examples had no reflector. These were used as back-up whistles on EMD FL-9 diesel-electric-electric locomotives (as this example), on 'Washboard' electric MU commuter cars, and on Mack FCD rail busses. To hear the sound of a Hancock back up whistle, click HERE.

This illuminated stand-up display was used at a passenger station or travel agency office somewhere in the Boston area during the late 1940s or early 1950s to advertise the New Haven's summer trains to Woods Hole. The Woods Hole trains made connections to ferry boats that took passengers to the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.Nantucket Travel Display

Dan'l Webster BagThis zippered vinyl plastic executive tote bag was given away by the New Haven's public relations department to promote the 'Dan'l Webster' high speed passenger train between late 1956 and early 1958. The unsuccessful 'Dan'l Webster' was a Pullman Standard Train X.

This NH logo came off the front end of a piggyback trailer leased by the New Haven during its final years. The logo was a pre-printed decal applied to a thin sheet of aluminum. A trailer with this emblem can be seen on page 126 of Morning Sun's New Haven Railroad Color Guide. I'm actively seeking the version that featured a red-orange NH logo painted directly on a bare aluminum plate.NH Logo
