A Delicious Interlude Folder

September 1st, 2008

The New Haven Railroad Dining Car Department produced and distributed a folder to advertise the railroad's recently redecorated heavyweight dining cars during July 1940. These dining cars, which were each given a different colonial New England themed name and interior decoration treatment, were called "The Colonial Diners". The advertising folder was entitled "A Delicious Interlude". This example is from the collection of Marc Frattasio.

This is the front cover of the "A Delicious Interlude" folder. Two things are noteworthy about this piece's front cover. First, a metallic gold ink was used. Second, the railroad's name or logo is nowhere to be found.
Here's the "front" side of this folder unfolded. You'll note that the back cover features a photo of a young girl perusing one of the special children's menus that the New Haven used from the late 1930s through the middle of the 1940s. The photo of the stylish woman wearing her hat to dinner in the "Paul Revere" diner was actually folded into the middle of the folder. A number of former New Haven Railroad Dining Car Department employees told me that this woman, who appeared in a number of railroad advertising photos, was a grill car hostess or attendant.
Here's the initial view of the "back" side of this folder unfolded. The gold-colored fold-down tab on the top side of this folder, with the message from Dining Car Department Superintendent Harold W. Quinlan, is the first obvious place where you'd see the name "New Haven Railroad" (if you looked very carefully you'd see it on the cover of the elephant-shaped children's menu on the back cover too).
When you fold the tab up, this is what you see, a nice shot of the interior of a redecorated New Haven Railroad heavyweight dining car. The particular car shown here was the "Paul Revere". Each "Colonial Diner" received a different interior decoration treatment in keeping with its name. The work was done at the Readville Car Shops.
