Travel Folders #5

November 1st, 2003

Despite its relatively small size, the New Haven was one of the most heavily passenger oriented railroads in the country. In fact, during the modern era, only the commuter heavy Long Island Railroad derived a greater proportion of revenue from passenger service. Over the years the New Haven published a huge variety of advertising folders to promote passenger travel. What follows are a small selection of typical New Haven Railroad travel folders. All items from the collection of Marc Frattasio.

Hell Gate RouteThe New Haven operated through passenger service between New England points and Washington D.C. via connections with the Pennsylvania Railroad at New York's Penn Station. This routing, which ran over the Hell Gate Bridge over New York's East River, was called the Hell Gate Route. This Hell Gate Route travel folder dates from the fall of 1930.

The state of Connecticut celebrated its 300th birthday during 1935. This New Haven Railroad travel folder presents train service to a number of special events conducted in Connecticut throughout 1935 in honor of the "Tercentenary".Connecticut Tercentenary

World's FairThe World's Fair held in New York City during 1939 and 1940 proved a bonanza to the New Haven Railroad. Not only did the railroad carry thousands of passenger into New York City to see the fair, many fair-goers decided to take the opportunity to ride the New Haven to visit New England. This travel folder from June 1940 presents special weekend excursion fares from Boston for passengers who wanted to visit the World's Fair.

This New Haven Railroad travel folder presents the schedules for a variety of musical events conducted in New York City during the summer of 1952. Passengers could travel to these events from nearly any location in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts via the New Haven's regularly scheduled trains.Summer Festival
