NHRHTA Technical Committee Review

 

OVERLAND NH ALCO PA-1 Class DER 3a

 

The following review includes an assessment of the 5 paint schemes offered for the recent OMI release of NEW HAVEN ALCO PA-1’s. Special thanks to Armand Mazzetti and THE CABOOSE team for graciously supporting the review of these models.

 

The NHRHTA Technical Committee also had the opportunity to review an advanced production model of NH 0767 courtesy of Overland on 10/25/03 at THE CABOOSE.  A number of suggestions regarding the model including painting and lettering details were provided to Overland in support of this project.

 

In general the model is a very accurate depiction of the NH PA-1.  A preliminary “test run” reveals the typical smooth running Overland/Ajin mechanism.  However, additional weight could improve performance especially when pulling typical consists. There are some minor discrepancies related to the thickness of the side window contour post relative to supporting photographs as well as the painting and lettering of the various NH paint schemes.  Further details are provided for each OMI stock number included in this production run:

Road Number 0762 - Warm Orange and Hunter Green Scheme

 

- Colors closely match NHRHTA color guide (Warm Orange Serial #292 and Hunter Green Serial #212) The Orange color appear to be brighter compared to color guide chip.

- All silver/gray striping crisp, clean and accurate in application.

- The word “NEW HAVEN” appears to have too thick of an “E” (vertically).

- Letter “F” designating front on the engine is proportionally too large.

Road Number 0780 - Pullman Green with Dulux gold stripes Scheme

 

- Colors match NHRHTA color guide (Pullman Green #13 and Dulux Gold  #44).

- All striping accurately applied per technical specifications.

- Double horizontal stripes absent on front coupler cover (snow door).

- Rear decal stripes were applied a bit “crooked” on model evaluated.

- Class number decaled in black - should be in dulux gold color.

- Word “NEW HAVEN” appears to be too tall and thick based on technical drawings.

- Letter “F” designating front on the engine is proportionally too large.

Road Number 0767 - Regular McGinnis “New Image” scheme

 

- Colors match NHRHTA color guide (Red-Orange Serial #406 and the white is WHITE).

- Class number decaled in black should be white.

- Front nose NH herald printed too low and should be centered in front white nose area.

- White side “NH” was re-printed showing two distinct shades of white from each application.

- Some models reviewed depicted slightly wobbly side NH’s from printing process.

- Letter “F” designating front on the engine is proportionally too large.

Road Number 0785 - Original McGinnis “New Image” scheme (white band on bottom)

 

- Colors match NHRHTA color guide (Red-Orange Serial #428).

- Front nose herald printed too low as noted above with cat # 087010016.3.

- Side White N was re-printed thus showing two distinct shades of white.

- Red-Orange H appears to be correct shade of orange.

- Some models viewed depicted slightly wobbly side NH’s from printing process.

- Letter “F” designating front on the engine is proportionally too large.

Road Number 0763 - Alpert Scheme

 

- Colors match NHRHTA color guide (Red-Orange Serial #406).

- All lettering and numbers correctly done in SCOTCHLITE.

- Safety appliances appropriately painted red-orange on black areas and black on Red-Orange areas.

- Ledge Step missing from engineer's side.

- Word “NEW HAVEN” lacks clarity & crispness (i.e.: letter A filled in).

- Letter “F” designating front on the engine is proportionally too large.
